Case Study 6: Renovating Main Bathroom

2a

The Project:

  • Two Storey
  • Year Built: 1980’s
  • 3 Bedrooms
  • 2 Bathrooms Approx. 2000 sq. ft. The original main floor bathroom was small with a basic tub/shower area. The homeowners wanted to keep the existing tub, replace the surrounding tile and faucet with wall-mount fixtures. They wanted a separate shower area built with the Schluter®-Kerdi Shower System and frameless glass. Tired of the old carpet and vanity, the homeowners wanted new floor tile to replace the carpet as well as a new vanity, mirror and light fixture. In addition to updating the look, long-term needs required the installation of grab bars.

Construction Challenges:

  • To create a separate shower area for this small bathroom, space had to be borrowed from the closet in the adjacent bedroom. For a more open, spacious feeling, it was decided to have a half wall on one side of the shower that would also frame the new vanity area. To update the look and add a 2nd towel bar, the medicine chest area would be covered with new drywall.
  • After the new shower area had been framed, drywalled and tiled, measurements for the frameless glass shower could be taken for ordering.
The Solutions:

  • The old wall tiles, tub/shower door, vanity, mirror, carpet, bath and sink fixtures were all removed. A large-format patterned wall tile and granite countertop were chosen to provide visual interest in the neutral colour palette while the cherry- stained vanity, which was ordered for its timeless Shaker styling and numerous drawers, provided the warmth of wood. A slate-coloured, matte porcelain tile chosen for the floor complemented the wall tile. A marble listello further defined and enhanced the tub surround area and tied into the marble ledges of the tub and shower half-wall.
  • Transitional style polished chrome fixtures were installed for the shower, sink and wall-mounted for the tub. The frameless glass shower featured a slide bar with a shower wand and a multi-function rain showerhead.
